Research beginnings Melanie Miller

How is it?

Name
What you want out of the course? Formal research...
Any research you have been involved in? Clickers...
Educational research comes from social science
Salts good for you ... then Now salt is bad for you..
What is reseach all about?
I'm confused as a consummer
Research is the :
systematic applicatio of a
family of methods to produce
trustworthy information about a problem
thesis = argument
My lense of how I look at things
Epistomology... what does this mean? from my perspective
Monitor - supervisor one who knows the topic area and 1 that knows the process stuff
Research Process:
Research Q + Aims How is it? I'm a constructivist....state this in the intro about yourself (check the alignment) their theoretical beliefs are...? we need to talk about what this is in the thesis we are reviewing. like the Epistemology and the Ontology... stuff about the researcher
Lit review
Methodology
Methods
Findings
Conclusions Discussions Summary
50% of references must be current other wise can be deemed to be out of date
Ontology... the way I see things from my culture...my templates...my personal researcher...The big picture is my framework ... focus in on the small stuff this is what I see explain how I see things and why... my beliefs and culture...
Round two with Howard Youngs from dept. of Ed
encouraged to do action research
core knowledge stuff
walk out with a questionaire
Hi I'm Christopher
Marine
research on the clickers using quanitative qualatative stuff as well
I hope to be able to..... I'll tell u later....a bit of backward mapping
re search ... re = looking again so what are we looking for again and again
seraching for patterns that are occuring...so what does this mean? diging deeper stuff...
interpret how is the learning experience viewed
looking at peoples interpretation of the world
a real focus on the individual they will be different ... why?
we collect research data... analyse it...= qualitative analysis is what we get
opened q = qualitative stuff... through our own voice ... general patterns
generalise for a group (meanings)
not interested in deep individuals interpretation
instead
overall what are the patterns or trends... go to a bigger group = quantitaive... attach numbers to it... collect data...analyse it... quantitaive analysis (numbers)

mixed methods research...is inbetween the two... a combination of these...
base line data for over view... then individual to check it out....
justify it theres no right or wrong... a supervisor can guide you...

framework of questionaires
look at surveymonkey.com....
by completing this anonymous questionaire you are providing your consent to participate in this research.
formats of questions:
x choice
rateable scales
open ended
true/faulse
answer with numbers
yes/no
calculating answers
closed question number response
ranking... predetermined terms... open....
linked open ended... if you chose q 3 ...explain in your own words...are/is there any others
semantic differentuals ... opposite ends

Research beginnings in the Library with Fran

Jeff, Paul, Stew,Ernest,Steve,Prem,Me
fran....
Literature review the process... Resourses.....Endnote....vs easybib
Think about lit review.... the importance and how it fits into research

What is a lit review? A report on a search (analysis) of what and who has written stuff on the topic you are interested in. Understanding the concepts /ethos behind what they have written. Can act as a stepping stone. Critique. More than a summary.
Define your perammiters.
Why do you do one?
find out current opinions, to embed and validate your ideas.Identify gaps and trends..
What is not a lit review? Read this and agree, restate what is already said or written. Reading behind the lines and putting up your own interpretation. It is not a summary.

Why is it important? So that you don't reinvent the wheel. Acknowledgement of tose that have gone on before.
What are some of the challenges you might face in doing one? Interpreting different points of view. Writing this interpretation up.
No one has looked at this before as you intend.
Knowing were to look to the find stuff.
Correctly acknowledging the stuff
Time
Lack of knowledge, where do I start
Staying objective and focussed
Shopping for info:
Quality (good stuff), cost and purpose(for research).
Authorative
Objectivity
Currency
Comprehensiveness (not ommiting stuff)
Accuracy
Where do you find quality info?
Print
Books

Cost:
Free vs paying
Time spent looking

Fit for purpose
Level
Authority
Currency
Accuracy

Best place is through the library web site
put the start of a word then adding an * in the search box..
use the search function
Assignment 1 find a thesis and critique
What is research bank? The stuff from unitec is in here ...find stuff in here to review
Kris is a data base... 4 polytechs search ....data base A to Z...

Rubrics for assessment and learning

How is it?
If we have a plan we can be at least 10% more efficient.
So we need to apply this to learning and assessment.
Rubrics seem to be a method of making the assessment overt.
A good site that is an intro to this, with some examples can be viewed at..
educase on rubrics for learning and assessment. See pages 8 - 10 for these.

Presenting Stuff

How is it?

A month or two ago "V" asked Steve and I if we were interested in presenting some of the stuff we are doing?
A bit scary but we listened more. "V" said he was prepared to help out in giving advice on the structure of the content and prompt us when and if needed.
Did a mini show and tell about Authentic Learning that embraces the Living Curriculium.
This was a very short one and I used a blog as the medium to present it. Several questions were asked at the end of the prezzi, one was on how assessment would be done. This question was in relationship to a concept I'm exploring at present. This is using a conversational rubric fro assessment.
Which is of the greater value? the learning that happens within the student or the measurement of percieved or dictated standards?
In the change to Student Centered Learning, it is my belief that learning is the foci.

After all, what is the use of adopting loftier goals for yourself and your students if you continue to use multiple-choice tests that seek the “right” answer, capturing only the lower-level knowledge that is easiest to measure? Rather than relying on a single assessment method, instructors who adopt authentic learning methods must analyze multiple forms of evidence to measure student performance, including observations of student engagement and artifacts produced in the process of completing tasks.
