Cat meetings starting the week 21th February

We start out having a good turn out for this week, a number of topics were discussed
We talked about how to put a link from moodle to Blog and how to put a link from blog to moodle
A example of how a moodle page could be set out and how to set up folders in moodle

A Picture of the white board, highlight topics discussed

The discussion moved to how web2.0 tools could be used to enhance the student learning
and how this fits in to the living curriculum

This video was taken using a ipod showing Chris explaining web2.0 tools

The next day we looked at engaging the student, this was constructed using the smart board and this was then saved as a PDF file. It was saved in a format so notes could be added to it to invoke general discussion at a later date. If you want to see the full version of the PDF contact Scott or Chris

Behind the scenes the rest of the team is busy doing prep getting the new courses reading for the pending intake of students. Graeme and Colin are using a HD camera to make videos of tricky procedures on a vehicle while up on a hoist. This video will then be uploaded to Youtube for students to access prior/after coming to class. This is allowing inquiry/curiosity and helping with the conversational side as well. The student can now come to class being able to converse in how to start to learn how to problem solve.
Ian is also working with Graeme in collaboration to construct a google document that allows a teacher-led community of enquiry.
Steven has made a blog showing staff/students how and what creative tools/concepts can be used in a blog.

How is it?

Today we will be doing a show and tell.... what are they doing? ....

Steven showed his blog on how to help students get into critical thinking... a user friendly
look .....All could share/use this
Carl talked on his students blogs.. with a good one and a not so good one... they got into it in the second semester. Carl talked about up loading images form a oscilloscope....
Darrel showed his blog and this had a cool photo of a G1 racing car.... this started a discussion on cool photos
Chester logged on using Firefox this time... what a difference... he had embedded a video and had some feedback through comments in this blog... a good one Chester....
Ian showed his bloggs ... with excellent videos on turbine startup/close downs.... good instructional stuff... then we talked on Picasca (photos in the cloud)
Ian showwed us how he was setting up moodle for a course... more good stuff here.
Scott showed Buzz and moodle..... good front end ... all looked similar so the student could follow.... Buzz showed how the students got right into feeding off each others.... a COP in the making... we all talked about this ... which brought up a discussion on assessment/marking.... this is to be the start for the next meeting...
Boy have these Automotive engineers come a long way in a short time... watch this space for more good stuff.
Scott needs to take videos of what we do and the odd photo!!!

I took a video using the ipod, on some of the functionalities of an oscilloscope
The ipod could be used to make videos, showing students how to use equipment or for the students to show understanding of a subject

How is it?
Explained the full path of Google, in as far as to Youtube. Questions such... Who has watched videos on Youtube? Whos has uploaded a video? (2)

Took a HD camera and did a video on setting a spark plug. Down loaded onto my MacBook Pro.. That along created heaps of discussion on when to be able to change over to laptops. Not very happy campers on this...
Most of the team did not have a Youtube account so walked many through this process... must get the team to all us Firefox when logging onto the internet....
Up loaded video from my desk to into youtube. Copy embed code ... open Blog paste in cde save watch ...
Steve took one the other day when I was doing a show and tell on Google docs, see link below.

A great deal more discussion on if this could be used in teaching and learning happened... more un happy campers...
Most now think/say that they will have a go at doing this.. I offered the HD camera to them ... this created more dicussion and class room equipment.... not happy campers.....
Unitec needs to get it's act in line with the demand in the class room. Management...... enough said here I think....
